The Story
Seeing businesses shut down in my neighborhood during the pandemic was terrifying. Family-owned pizza shops, bodegas, restaurants — places that knew your name and your order before your phone ever had them saved as favorites on UberEats. That kind of familiarity and customer service, gone. Almost overnight. No prior notice other than the writing on the wall and maybe a sign on the closed grate.
And the painful truth? A lot of them simply couldn't keep up. Business had shifted online — meeting customers where they were confined: at home. Websites, email lists, reviews, social presence, online ordering — these weren't luxuries anymore. They were survival tools. And too many local restaurants just didn't have them.
That gap still exists today. Some businesses always seem to be ahead of the curve, while others lag behind — not because the food is worse, but because they lack the systems. The worst part is that many owners believe they need deep pockets to bring in a steady stream of customers. That's simply not true. But I understand it: not every business owner is a marketer.
